Frequently asked questions

How many applications do you receive each year?

In 2019 we had more than 500 applications for 110 places on Chemistry courses. We made offers to about 400 of these.

How many students are on each different Chemistry degree?

We don't have a set number of places on each separate degree. In most years the split is about 60 students on the regular Chemistry degree (BSc or MChem), 25-30 studying Pharmaceutical Chemistry, and 15-20 on Chemistry with Forensic Science. The Chemistry with Enterprise degree is new this year; we're expecting about 10-20 students on that.

Can I change from one Chemistry to a different one?

The first half of each degree is the same so you can switch to a different Chemistry degree at the end of the first Semester (in January). After that, the three different courses diverge.

Changing between BSc and MChem is straightforward. You can do this at any time in the first two years. In fact, about 40% of our students move one way or the other! To move onto (or stay on) the MChem you need to maintain an average score of 60%.

What materials do I need to buy?

We will provide you with a Study Pack that includes everything you need:

  • Printed lecture notes and lab manuals
  • Lab coat and safety glasses (and a personal locker to keep them in)
  • Molecular modelling kit
  • Scientific calculator
  • Duplicate lab notebook
  • And a full package of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel etc

You will also have full access to on-line notes and lecture recordings.

You may want to buy some additional textbooks, or use the ones in the David Wilson Library.

How will studying a Chemistry degree at Leicester improve my employability?

A Chemistry degree from the University of Leicester will provide you with a broad portfolio of subject-specific and transferable skills. By the time you graduate, you will have demonstrated your ability as an excellent problem solver; shown that you can work effectively within a team or individually; and learned how to be an outstanding communicator. Our courses include activities that were co-developed by our lecturers with experts from industry to help you gain experience and develop skills that will give you a competitive edge when applying for graduate roles.

Can I study abroad?

Many of our courses feature the opportunity to study abroad.

There are many benefits of spending time studying abroad during your course - International experiences can enhance your academic and personal skills and your employability.

Most students go for one academic year, between the second and third years of their course. However, some Schools offer one-semester options. You can also consider going on an overseas summer school, whether as a taster for a full year, or simply as a shorter alternative. And don’t worry if you don’t currently speak any other languages - we have many partner universities in other English-speaking countries, and most of our partner universities teach at least some of their classes in English.

We have exchange partner universities on every continent (except Antarctica!). Where you can go depends on your course and this list can vary from year to year.
