Banned Items
To help keep everyone in our student halls safe and comfortable, certain items aren’t allowed in accommodation. This page provides a quick guide to what you must not have when staying in our accommodation. Please check the list before moving in to make sure your room stays safe, compliant, and free from potential hazards.
- E-scooters
- Bicycles (inside accommodation)
- Motor cycles parts
- Illegal substances
- Personal fridges (not medical)
- Heavy duty electrical appliances
- Weapons (firearms, air-weapons, bows, blades, swords, martial arts weapons, paint-ball guns, replica, ceremonial and toy weapons). Individuals who carry any ceremonial item of such description as part of their religious practice should contact Student Support Services
- Attachments to water systems
Fire/Heat/Ignition risks
- Shisha / hookah pipes and charcoal burners
- BBQs (including disposable BBQs)
- Fire pits / chimineas
- Portable camping stoves (any fuel type)
- Portable heaters (fan, halogen, element, etc. but oil heaters are permitted)
- Heated electric blankets and heated throws
- Hot plates / portable grills / sandwich presses / waffle makers etc.
- Candles/incense burners
- Self-heating cooking appliances without a timer (induction hob e.g.)
- No cooking items in rooms, only kitchens
Electrical safety
- Daisy-chained extension leads
- Unapproved / non-UK compliant electrical items (no CE/UKCA, imported chargers)
- High-powered gaming PCs

Electrical appliances must be PAT-tested
Vaping/smoking/aerosols
- Vapes / e-cigarettes
- Nitrous oxide (N2O) canisters
- Large quantities of aerosols (deodorant stockpiling etc.)
Chemicals/hazardous substances
- Petrol / diesel / fuel containers
- Solvents / paint thinners
- Large quantities of cleaning chemicals
- Fireworks / flares / smoke bombs
- Chemicals or biological substances that have the potential to cause harm to human health or environment
