Profile

Dan Greenwood is Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacy, with primary responsibility for the clinical and pharmacy practice aspects of the new Master of Pharmacy programme (intake planned from September 2024). Having completed his degree and PhD at the University of Manchester, he led development of aspects of the new MBChB degree at Essex Medical School. Dan is a passionate educator with motives to improve the quality and impact of research informed clinical pharmacy education. His research has progressed this theme, having defined the role of the pharmacist practitioner. As well as university activity, Dan consults patients in primary care one session per week. He also holds several national leadership positions including: oversight of the British National Formulary; question writer for the national Prescribing Safety Assessment; and a founding member of the UK Young Academy (The Royal Society, Youth Branch).

Research

Completing his PhD in 2020 titled “Emergency Department Pharmacist Practitioners in the United Kingdom: a mixed methods investigation”, Dan continues to undertake studies of medicines use and pharmacy services in urgent and emergency care. His current main study, funded by Pharmacy Research UK, aims to revise the national emergency care triage system to help identify patient medicines issues. Other ongoing projects focus on community pharmacy service provision during the COVID-19 pandemic, including medicines-related health inequalities during that time. To date Dan has secured >£60,000 in research income and has published work in leading international pharmacy journals.

Supervision

Dan has supervised over 20 Master’s level students across a range of subjects including: pharmacy practice, medicines use and safety, and medical and pharmacy education. 

Teaching

With experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacists, medics, nurses and physician associates, Dan’s current focus is curricula design for the new MPharm at University of Leicester. His key areas of expertise are: therapeutics (applied pharmacology) and clinical skills – including communication and prescribing. Taking an interactive and engaging approach which is research informed, he routinely receives strongly positive feedback on his teaching.
