Trainee doctors in India to bolster their clinical skills with the NHS thanks to landmark initiative
Doctors in training from India will now be able to continue their training in NHS hospitals in the UK, thanks to a landmark initiative involving the University of Leicester.
The programme will see doctors undertake two years of training in India, followed by two years’ training with the NHS, with the aim of equipping them with advanced clinical expertise and exposure to global best practices.
The 2+2 Post Graduate India-UK Residency Programme has been developed in partnership with Apollo Health Resources, in India, and the University, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and BAPIO Training Academy in the UK.
Designed in collaboration with leading academic and clinical institutions, the four-year programme sees doctors undergo training at Apollo Hospitals in India, before taking up two years of supervised residency within NHS hospitals in the UK. During the programme, participants will be rigorously prepared for internationally recognised medical qualifications such as MRCP, MRCS, MRCOG, MRCPCH, MRCEM, and FRCR.
Professor Henrietta O’Connor, Provost & Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Leicester, said: “We are delighted to partner with Apollo in shaping this innovative programme. It not only bridges the gap between Indian and UK medical training but also provides participants with academic and professional development that will prepare them to thrive in multidisciplinary healthcare systems. This collaboration reflects our shared vision of strengthening global healthcare through education, research, and training.”
Sivaramakrishnan Venkateswaran, CEO of Apollo Knowledge, said: “This programme exemplifies Apollo’s commitment to building future-ready global healthcare professionals. By combining structured clinical rotations, bedside teaching, and world-class mentorship in both India and the UK, we are offering doctors in training a pathway to international careers while ensuring they are equipped with the skills to elevate healthcare standards worldwide.”
Throughout the programme, participants will receive a competitive stipend and dedicated support to clear Membership of Royal Colleges (MRC) examinations – a crucial step for practicing medicine in the UK. A unique feature of this initiative is the opportunity for participants to simultaneously enrol in a career-enhancing Masters programme at the University of Leicester in fields such as Clinical Education and Healthcare Management.
By seamlessly connecting Indian medical graduates with advanced UK training and qualifications, the 2+2 Post Graduate India-UK Residency Programme offers an unparalleled opportunity to gain international exposure, refine clinical competencies, and contribute to the future of global healthcare.
