UK’s first clinical academic Associate Professor in Neonatal Nursing appointed in Leicester

The University of Leicester and University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust are proud to announce the joint appointment of Dr Katie Gallagher as the UK’s first Clinical Associate Professor in Neonatal Nursing.
This landmark clinical-academic appointment sets a national precedent for health and care professional clinical academic roles, embedding research within clinical practice, and advancing care for babies born pre-term/unwell infants and their families.
Dr Gallagher is a neonatal nurse, current NIHR Clinical Lecturer, and Chair of the Neonatal Nurses Association (NNA). She is nationally recognised for her leadership in neonatal nursing research and advocacy. Her work focuses on enhancing parental engagement, improving clinical outcomes for preterm infants, and building research capacity for health and care professions. As Chair of the Neonatal Nurses Association, Dr Gallagher leads strategic efforts to advance neonatal nursing practice and policy across the UK.
Speaking about her new appointment, Dr Gallagher said: “I’m absolutely delighted to be joining the team here at the University of Leicester and University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. To be part of such an innovative team who truly value the important role of nurses in both clinical care and research is a privilege. I'm excited to explore how we can enhance the care we provide to families, and to further develop the role of nurses in clinical research.”
Professor David Wright, Head of the School of Healthcare and Professor of Health Services Research at the University of Leicester said: “Katie’s appointment is pivotal to our growth of clinical academic leaders in Leicester that will have impact through their research, clinical, education and leadership activities, locally, regionally and beyond.

Professor Julie Hogg, Chief Nurse at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and Honorary Professor at the University of Leicester, called the new role “trailblazing”.
She said: “Her dedication to neonatal care and research excellence will make a real difference to the lives of babies and families across our region. This appointment reflects our commitment to building a research-active health and care workforce and delivering the highest standards of compassionate, evidence-based care.”
Professor Joseph Manning MBE, Professor of Nursing and Child Health at the University added he was “delighted” by her appointment.
“Dr Gallagher’s presence and leadership across both organisations will accelerate the generation of evidence that directly informs and enhances care for babies and families,” he said.
“This role will further strengthen the connection between research and real-world impact, ensuring that innovation leads to meaningful improvements for families and the wider health system.”
