Leicester reaches three million readers on The Conversation

Academics from across our University have collectively captured the imagination of over three million readers through over 180 articles written for The Conversation, setting a new milestone for Leicester in delivering expert opinion in response to topical news.

Articles published by Leicester academics cover a range of research areas, including: how salmonella can thrive in salad bags, how migraines were taken more seriously in Medieval times, how Juno is now delivering spectacular insights into Jupiter and more.

The article that pushed Leicester above three million readers was written by Dr Leandro Minku from the Department of Informatics and explores if AI will ever be able to understand human emotions. The article was reported on by national media outlets, including the Daily Mail and the Independent.

With a growing community of more than 45,300 academics and researchers from 1,911 institutions, The Conversation is encouraging Leicester academics interested in raising their profile to become an author and pitch article ideas based on individual research expertise.

Experts are also regularly contributing opinion pieces to the University's Think: Leicester platform, which provides academics and doctoral students with an opportunity to present their independent views on topical news. Recent highlights have included a number of articles about the policies of Donald Trump and insights into Brexit and the future of the UK.
