Using our services

Borrowing

The Library offers a range of items that can be borrowed, these include:

  • Books
  • Journals
  • DVDs
  • Student Laptops*
  • Locker keys*

Please note that not all user are eligible to borrow all items.

University students and staff

University students and staff may borrow up to 40 library items, for a minimum of 7 days. If items are not held or recalled for other users they may be kept for as long as needed and will be renewed automatically. Some items are for use in the Library only

Student laptops and locker keys cannot be renewed and should be returned to the Information Hub, in the Library by the due date/time.

External members

External members, such as alumni, members of the public and staff and students form other UK universities, may borrow up to 10 books for a minimum of 7 days and up to 4 weeks if books are not held or recalled for other users. Some items are for use in the Library only.

External members are unable to borrow laptops as they are for our students only.

As a guest borrower, you are subject to the fines that are charged for the late return of items and you will be charged for any books not returned.

Use our location guide to find books by subject or use Library Search to find books and journals. 

Returning library items

The majority of library items can be returned on the self-service equipment or at the book drop in the front of the Library. Student laptops and locker keys should be returned at the Information Hub during staff hours.

Reserving library items

If a book or item you require is on loan to another reader you may reserve it by logging onto the Library Search and placing a request. You will be emailed when it is available for collection from the Information Hub.

Distance learning students

Students studying on a distance learning module and part-time postgraduate research students may request postal loans, articles from journals and chapters to be supplied directly to them. To request items log onto the Library Search and place a request, selecting the options for distance learning students.

Requesting books and journals from other libraries

You can request items not available in the library from our document supply service if they are for the purposes of personal study or non-commercial research.  Physical items will need to be collected from the David Wilson Library.

Lending books and journals to other libraries

We accept requests for journal articles, book chapters and physical items from libraries in the UK and around the World using a variety of document supply and inter-library loan services.
