Requesting a letter

The University can provide students with a range of letters that can support students during their studies.

Most of these letters can be downloaded by current students using MyStudentRecord. If there are any problems accessing MyStudentRecord our IT team can help to resolve this.

Please note if a student has any outstanding fees to pay, they may not be eligible to receive a letter.

Types of Letters

Certificate of Registration

This letter confirms status as a student for the current academic year, and can be used for:

  • Council Tax exemption
  • Evidencing student status
  • Inviting visitors to the UK
  • Landlords or letting agencies
  • Proof of address
  • Registering with a local NHS GP or surgery

Students can download this letter from the My Uni Documents section of MyStudentRecord, providing they have fully completed registration. 

If any of the address details are incorrect; personal details can be updated in the My Details section of MyStudentRecord. A new letter can then be downloaded.

Bank Letter

This letter can be used to support applications to open a UK bank account. Students will need to know which bank they wish to open an account with. 

Students can download this letter from the My Uni Documents section of MyStudentRecord, provided they have fully completed registration.

If any of the details are incorrect; personal details can be updated in the My Details section of MyStudentRecord. A new letter can then be downloaded.

Certificate of Employability

All sponsored students on Student/Tier 4 visas can obtain a Certificate of Employability.

Eligible students can download this letter from the My Uni Documents section of MyStudentRecord, provided they have fully completed registration.

If any of the address details are incorrect, personal details can be updated in the My Details section of MyStudentRecord. A new letter can then be downloaded.

Schengen Visa Letter

International students (non-EU) travelling to Europe can request a Schengen visa letter if travelling to the Schengen area. This letter cannot be used for any other travel reasons.

Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught Students

Schengen visa letters can be requested by emailing studentservices@leicester.ac.uk

Students will need to provide information about the travel destination(s):

  • Planning on visiting multiple countries - provide the country where most time will be spent.
  • Planning on spending equal amounts of time in several countries - provide the first country that will be visited

Students should not arrange to travel during term time or when they have timetabled teaching events.

Please make sure to read the information on our Student Immigration Advice and Compliance website (log-in required).

Please note the letter may take up to ten working days to produce.

Postgraduate Research Students

Students can download a Certificate of Registration from the My Uni Documents section of MyStudentRecord, provided they have fully completed registration.

Research students may also need to request an additional letter from their academic school or department that confirms they have approved leave from their course.

Distance Learning Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught Students

Distance Learning students studying on an undergraduate or postgraduate taught course, will need to contact dlstudy@leicester.ac.uk to request a letter.

Research Students - Awaiting Viva Voce

Research students that have submitted their thesis for examination and are awaiting their viva voce can download a letter confirming this.

Students can download the letter from the My Uni Documents section of MyStudentRecord, provided they have submitted their thesis and not completed their viva voce.

Fees Letter

This letter lists your paid/outstanding fees.

To request this letter please email feesandincome@leicester.ac.uk

CAS Number

International full-time students with a student visa that will expire before the course finishes may be eligible to apply for a CAS number. This will enable them to apply to the Home Office to renew the visa.

Please note an application for a CAS number should be submitted no later than one month before the visa expires.

Graduation Invite Letter

A graduation invite letter can be used to show a student is due to graduate from the University of Leicester, and can be used to:

  • submit to an employer for annual leave
  • submit as part of a visa application for the student
  • submit as part of a visa application for the student’s guests

Award Letter

Once an award has been confirmed by an examination board and confirmation released to a student, a letter can be provided confirming the award.

This letter can be used for:

  • Evidence of award before graduation
  • Proof of qualification for employers
  • Proof of qualification for admission into further courses, study or professional bodies
  • International students returning home with a UK qualification

Students with a valid university IT account can download an award letter from the My Uni Documents section of MyStudentRecord, until their IT account expires.
