Application process
Entry requirements for research degrees
Usually we ask for an upper second class (2.1) honours BA degree or equivalent in English, and a relevant MA degree qualification.
Step 1: Choose a topic
Before you apply for your PhD, take the time to think very carefully about what it is you want to research.
- Review our list of suggested postgraduate research topics
To aid you with this, we have a list of current PhD research projects within the department, which may help you to clarify your proposal.
If you are a member of subscribing institution you should consult the Index to Theses prior to applying. Reviewing the Index to Theses should help you to determine the originality of your research topic.

Step 2: Find a supervisor
Make sure that we can supervise you. We have specialists in our team working on literature, language and creative writing, but it is crucial that you find the right supervisor for your project.
- Review our staff list to find a suitable supervisor
Step 3: Apply
Your application should also include a detailed research proposal. You are encouraged to approach the School with an outline proposal for consideration by potential supervisors before formal application.
Once you have taken the time to decide upon a proposal and find a suitable supervisor, you can then apply online.
