The NASA 4-D Executive Space Program brings together two credible, complementary programs into a single executive experience: the NASA 4-D Leadership Program (2 days), the human performance system NASA built after the Challenger disaster, and the Executive Guide to Space (3 days), Space Park Leicester's technical and strategic space-sector course, delivered at Space Park Leicester with real ESA, NASA and JAXA mission heritage behind it.
Run together across a single week, the two programs form a complete executive experience: participants gain the technical and strategic literacy of the space sector alongside the human leadership system NASA itself relies on to build high-performing teams under pressure.
The program is designed to be flexible. Participants can attend either course individually (NASA 4-D Leadership, or the Executive Guide to Space), or attend the full week as a combined program at a preferential bundle price. This makes the offer accessible to organisations with a narrower need, while giving those who want the complete experience a clear reason to commit to the full week.
It's aimed at two audiences. The Executive Guide to Space is for both technical and non-technical professionals: people new to or moving into the space industry, existing space-sector professionals upskilling into technical roles, and non-technical functions such as project management, policy, marketing, legal and finance who support space-sector organisations. The NASA 4-D Leadership Program is for leaders more broadly, from any industry, since the behaviours it teaches help to build high-performing, cohesive teams in any industry.

There are no formal Entry requirements.
The course has been designed as an executive overview so some knowledge technical knowledge may be helpful but it is not required.

Our Executive guide to Space course is delivered at Space Park Leicester, a world leading hub for space research, innovation, and enterprise. Officially opened by British astronaut Tim Peake in March 2022, Space Park builds on Leicester’s 60-plus year heritage as an international participant in space science and exploration, and a major collaborator with international space agencies, research institutes and industry.
This £100 million development is the world’s first science and innovation park dedicated to – and specifically designed for – space-related companies and researchers. Offering 9,700 square metres of laboratories, workshops, offices, teaching spaces, manufacturing facilities and specialist computational environments including a Concurrent Design Facility and a Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality lab, focussing primarily on research, development and applications of space

Delegates attending The Executive Guide to space at Space Park Leicester will also have an opportunity to tour the facilities.

Days 1 – 2: NASA 4-D Leadership Programme
The NASA 4-D system was developed to address shortfalls following a string of mission failures within the organisation. It was designed to foster eight core behaviours that have transformed the teams at NASA. Curated to create cohesive, high-performing teams, this program has played a pivotal role in establishing the culture that makes NASA Best Place to work in federal government for 13 consecutive years. It is designed to create a shared leadership lexicon that addresses social context directly, enabling leaders to rapidly assemble high-performing teams, without the usual ‘forming, storming, norming and performing’ dramas.
It drives noticeable behavioural changes and impact, as measure against both internal and external benchmarks.
The modules listed reflect those currently available to students starting in the next intake and may differ from the modules available to current students. Every year, we review our modules and their content to ensure that our courses maintain the best academic and student experience possible. Whilst this does mean elements of your course may change in future academic years, it ensures your course is giving you a research-inspired education and preparing you for your future.

Days 3-5: Executive Guide to Space
The Executive Guide to Space Course is a 3-day programme led by industry experts with over 6 decades of experience leading and developing space missions. It will guide participants through a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to design, build, launch and operate a successful space mission. It is designed for both technical and non-technical professionals who are looking to develop an understanding of the broad elements governing a space mission.
The first day will explore the UK Space landscape and opportunity and provide an overview oh a spacecraft and the orbits you might consider for a mission.
Day two focuses on spacecraft engineering, guiding delegates through the timeline of an engineering project while highlighting the unique considerations required for space based missions, from hardware, to process and paperwork. This is followed by a look at the space environment and the challenges it provides to ensuring the successful operation of the mission. We will also discuss commonly used mitigation strategies employed by the industry.
The final day takes a focus on the complex and evolving legal and regulatory framework associated with space missions. Led by our world leading partners at Alden Legal, they will highlight the processes for ensuring missions are insured, obtaining launch licenses, crafting international agreements for operation and data usage and walk you through the communications regulations that allow communication with your operating spacecraft.

Why Leicester
This course is delivered by a team comprising individuals with extensive experience in the development, management, delivery and operation of spacecraft payloads and missions, from small technology demonstrators to large international missions, and authoring of regulations and legislation governing international space operations.
The programme is led by the University of Leicester, with over 6 decades of experience in space, including significant roles in major missions including James Webb Space Telescope, JUICE, BepiColombo, and Earth Observation missions, working with ESA, NASA, JAXA and a wide range of international industry and academic partners.
The course team are all involved in the development and delivery of skills and training at Undergraduate, Postgraduate and CPD levels, and know how to turn professional experience into engaging, effective teaching.
The University has 'end-to-end' capability, covering the earliest phases of concept development, including fundamental scientific and engineering drivers, through to assembly, integration and testing, launch support, operations and data exploitation.
Teaching and learning
There are no assessments for this course. The programme is designed with some understanding of the financial and time constraints faced by learners who are already in full time employment, so preparatory activities are kept to a minimum and limited to a small number of suggested articles to read.
Delivery partners include Alden Legal. Alden is a specialist legal consultancy internationally known for their satellite, space and communications law and regulatory expertise. They specialise in providing legal, regulatory, policy and consulting advice in Europe; working at the cutting edge of commercial, transactional, regulatory, policy and national security issues in the satellite, space, communications and applications industries.
