Sanctuary Seekers’ Unit

Ukraine support

After the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the University immediately reacted with messages of support and solidarity. A group from across the University was established to find ways in which we could offer short, medium and long-term support to institutions and individuals affected by the events. The group is led by Philip Horspool from the Centre for International Training and Education (CITE) and involves staff from a range of areas across the institution.

The focus has been, and continues to be, in three main areas:

  1. Twinning with Ukrainian universities and offering short term opportunities for their communities as well as building toward a long term and sustainable partnership
  2. Working with a consortium of other UK universities to offer displaced students and academics the opportunity to come to the UK through the Homes for Ukraine scheme and continue with their academic engagement
  3. Showing solidarity and support for fundraising to help not only those who come to the UK but those who have been displaced within Ukraine or have had to flee to a neighbouring country
