Sanctuary Seekers’ Unit
Ukraine support
After the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the University immediately reacted with messages of support and solidarity. A group from across the University was established to find ways in which we could offer short, medium and long-term support to institutions and individuals affected by the events. The group is led by Philip Horspool from the Centre for International Training and Education (CITE) and involves staff from a range of areas across the institution.
The focus has been, and continues to be, in three main areas:
- Twinning with Ukrainian universities and offering short term opportunities for their communities as well as building toward a long term and sustainable partnership
- Working with a consortium of other UK universities to offer displaced students and academics the opportunity to come to the UK through the Homes for Ukraine scheme and continue with their academic engagement
- Showing solidarity and support for fundraising to help not only those who come to the UK but those who have been displaced within Ukraine or have had to flee to a neighbouring country
