English for Media International Summer Programme

The English for Media International Summer Programme is aimed at media students and professionals of all disciplines wishing to improve their English for use in a Media context. The course combines the discipline expertise of the University of Leicester’s School of Arts, Media and Communication with the language expertise of the English Language Teaching Unit (ELTU).

Aims of the English for Media International Summer Programme

The main aims of the course are to develop participants’ ability to communicate when using English in a media context and to give them an opportunity to experience media study at a British university. We focus on all four language skills – speaking, listening, reading and writing but the main emphasis will be on improving spoken English.

Course contents

This intensive course primarily focuses on language used in media contexts. Participants will be provided with opportunities to use new vocabulary and language structures in contexts such as at the final poster presentation.
This specially designed two-week course combines:

  • A course welcome and induction day
  • General English classes to improve your vocabulary and confidence in interacting with English language speakers in everyday life, with particular emphasis on speaking and listening skills  
  • Academic English classes where you will learn how to design and present an academic poster, culminating in the showcasing of your work in a research exhibition
  • Media lectures delivered by academics from the School of Arts, Media and Communication on contemporary media studies topics such as Digital Media, Media and Advertising and Global Media and Communication. 
  • Two evening social activities
  • A Saturday day trip to a place of interest such as London
  • An end-of-course presentation ceremony and tutor feedback

  • Course dates: Monday 14 July – Friday 25 July 2025 (accommodation available from Sunday 13 July – Saturday 26 July 2025)

Entry requirements

  • Participants must be aged 18 or over
  • Participants must be studying Media or have an interest in studying Media in the future.
  • Minimum English level of IELTS 4.5 or equivalent.
  • We will accept a range of test results, including:
    • CASEC
    • CET4/CET6
    • EIKEN
    • GTEC
    • TOEFL
    • TOEIC
  • Please upload evidence of your English test on your online application
  • We may be able to test your English

Accommodation

  • Accommodation will be in self-catered university accommodation within walking distance of the campus and the city centre
  • Participants will be housed in a single study bedroom with ensuite bathroom and will share kitchen facilities. All bills and Wi-Fi access are included. Bedding and kitchen equipment are also provided. 

Cost

  • £2,200 – students from a University of Leicester partner
  • £2,300 – students from non-partner universities

Payment is required in full to accept a place on the course. Payment deadline: Friday 16 May 2025.
