Study Skills for International Scholars Programme

The Study Skills for International Scholars Programme is a two-week preparation course aimed at giving international students training in key academic skills in preparation for university study in the UK.

The Study Skills for International Scholars Programme is ideal for international students who wish to develop essential skills and familiarise themselves with UK study culture in a supportive environment. It is designed to give students a head start in their academic studies, avoid common pitfalls and inspire them to succeed.

Course overview

Our Study Skills for International Scholars Programme gives international students a flying start in their studies, helping them to be successful in their chosen field of study. 

Course aims

In the programme you will:

  • Work on study skills to become a more effective student.
  • Practice integrating digital tools such as AI into your studies.
  • Engage with the ideas and issues in your chosen field of study, through reading, listening and discussion.
  • Gain awareness of academic values and expectations in the UK, such as use of AI and plagiarism.

Course content

The course is focused on the skills that students need to be successful in the UK:

  • Critical thinking, evaluating and questioning skills.
  • Researching topics and integrating ideas into your thinking.
  • Organising and planning common types of academic assessment.
  • Communicating confidently with colleagues and faculty.
  • Making plans, setting goals and targets.
  • More effective reading and listening strategies.

  • 21 hours of face-to-face online classes.
  • 20 hours of guided activities and independent study.
  • Maximum class size of 16, interacting with the tutor and other students.
  • High-quality materials delivered on the University’s online learning platform. These will remain available to you for the full duration of your time at Leicester.
