The landscape of chemical manufacturing is rapidly evolving, in line with a strategic need for new sustainable and environmentally-friendly processes that could be applied to the production of commodity chemicals (e.g. plastics, fuels, fertilisers), fine chemicals (e.g. precursors, drug intermediates) and speciality chemicals (e.g. pharmaceuticals, adhesives, cosmetics). Our research portfolio focuses on three main areas:
- The discovery of new synthetic methodologies.
- The development of catalysts and reagents based on earth-abundant, non-toxic metals.
- The use of nature as an inspiration for the development of new sustainable synthetic methods.

Synthetic chemistry is the silent architect of modern society, helping to produce life-saving medicines and world-changing technologies. Using our knowledge as chemists, we can produce more effective pharmaceuticals, and develop catalytic strategies that forge a more sustainable future for the planet.
