Leicester is a safe place to study

The University of Leicester is a safe place to work and study and we have a 24/7 security team that work across all University sites in order to keep you safe. You will see them in their high-visibility uniform regularly patrolling campus and the surrounding area. This includes community patrols that are carried out daily at key times when people are arriving or departing from the University.

The team respond to a range of incidents and this includes everything from minor reports through to the more serious incidents. But not only do we patrol it regularly on foot and through mobile patrols, we have a strong suite of security technology to support us that includes alarms, access control, Safezone and CCTV. This technology helps us to both proactively identify potential incidents before they occur and also respond to incidents when we have been alerted to one. 

Here are some things to consider when travelling to, from and around campus, that will help to keep you safer: 

• Register for Safezone.
• Walk in groups when travelling at night – try to use well-lit streets and a route you are familiar with.
• Take a pre-booked taxi if travelling alone – only a ‘black cab’ should stop for you at the roadside, all other taxi’s must be booked in advance. If you’re using Uber, consider sharing the ride details with friends.
• Check the times of the last bus or train if you’re using public transport – just in case you accidentally miss your ride, you won’t be stranded.
• Don’t walk along wearing earphones or on video chats – be aware of your surroundings.
• Keep mobile phones, tablets and other valuable items out of sight – don't show potential thieves what you have to offer them.
• Get a personal attack alarm, just in case – these are available from the Security Lodge, opposite the Danielle Brown Sports Centre.
