Mick Frost

Richard Thomas writes:

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mick Frost, a dearly respected colleague, gifted engineer, and cherished friend, who died on 22 April 2026 following a courageous six year battle with cancer.

Born on 13 September 1966 in Belper, Derbyshire, Mick’s life was rooted in the county he so loved. Raised in humble beginnings he carried forward the values of hard work, resilience and humility throughout his life. Bright and capable at school, had he had the opportunity he would have liked to have studied at university, but instead Mick’s path led him into an electrical engineering apprenticeship, an opportunity he seized with determination, laying the foundation for a distinguished and impactful career.

On 1 May 1993, Mick married Joanne in nearby Holbrook where they continued to live, beginning a partnership that would flourish both personally and professionally. Together they built a happy family life, raising their children, Lucy and Sam, of whom Mick was immensely proud. Their shared ambition also led them to establish a successful electrical engineering business together demonstrating Mick’s technical expertise as well as his proactive attitude, sense of ownership, ability to find creative solutions to problems and above all resilience.

Mick later chose to dedicate his talents to public service. He worked at De Montfort University before joining the University of Leicester, where, as Head of Maintenance and Engineering within Estates and Campus Services, he became a highly respected and valued member of the team. Over more than seven years, Mick made a profound difference improving the safe function and performance of the university’s infrastructure while fostering strong partnerships across departments. He was known for his rigorous, structured approach, exceptional attention to detail, and deep engineering knowledge, as well as for his quiet leadership and unwavering integrity.

Beyond his professional achievements, Mick was a man of kindness, and thoughtful presence. He built enduring friendships with colleagues and will be remembered not only for what he achieved, but for how he made others feel supported, respected and valued. Mick had a lifelong passion for football and cricket, and was a devoted Derby County supporter and season ticket holder, following his beloved club with characteristic loyalty through every high and low.

Mick’s legacy lives on through his family, his work, and the many lives he touched. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever appreciated.
