Attenborough Arts Centre are taking over Centenary Square on 30 May as part of Summertime22, celebrating the best of the British seaside. With lots of creative crafts, arts and performances to get you ready for the summer. So come, grab a free ice-cream get involved. Just watch out for the seagulls!
Throughout the day we have the following for you to get involved with:
11.00am - 5.00pm (Centenary Square)
Vintage ice cream truck
Take part in any of our activities and get a coupon for a free ice-cream from the vintage ice-cream truck on Centenary square. A British seaside tradition: the classic "99" with a flake. We have 300 to give away so make sure you get yours!
Fun fair games with prizes
Come and play Hook-a-duck, Balls in a Bucket or Tin Can Alley and win a range of prizes from candy floss to arts materials and more.
Have a go on our pottery wheel, but act quick. You have one minute to throw your best pot, they will be judged at the end of the day and the best in show wins a prize worth £50!
Afghan Box Camera peep through board
Get a photo at our peep through board with an Afghan Box Camera. The original instax and one of only two in the UK, these cameras produce a wonderful vintage photo for you to take home and keep, taken the exact same way as they were in the Victorian era.
Sam Metz interactive sculpture
'Sam Metz is a neurodivergent artist that likes to consider representing movement through sculptural works. Come and interact with sculptures they have created, along with other mindful and creative activities, to explore movement, shape and form. These are all in relation to the exhibition we have here at Attenborough Arts Centre ‘Sam Metz: Making Solid Unpredictable Bodies.

Live music performances
Soak up the sun and get into the summer vibe with some amazing live music a performances.
12.30pm and 1.30pm (Centenary Square)
Strong man life drawing
As part of our Independent Life Drawing programme (every Wednesday at the Attenborough Arts Centre). Join our tutor as they teach you the basics of life drawing, through quick sketches, extended poses and warm up exercises. The model will be dressed in a Victorian strong man outfit (otherwise they may get a bit cold).
1.30pm - 2.30pm (Centenary Square)
Draw as a group, taking it in turns to finish a body part, and reveal the ‘immaculate mermaid’ at the end. A fun, group lead activity which gets those creative juices flowing with ever bizarre results.
5.30pm - 7.30pm (Centenary Square)
Film screening: Paddington
Finished your exams and looking for something to do? Need a fun place to hang out with friends? Wrap up the day with an outdoor film screening of Paddington, a film picked by the Attenborough Advocates. Free Pick 'n' Mix for everyone who attends and a goody bag from AAC!

Sulets will be on in Centenary Square giving away free Slush drinks to students and to chat about student accommodation options for next year. You can book a viewing on the day and discuss available options.

Our final day of Summertime22 will include some activities to celebrate the Queen's Jubilee which will be inclusive for all our staff and students to join in.

Treasures from the Archives: Royal Visits
In celebration of the Platinum Jubilee, we delve into the archives to remember the Queen’s previous visits to the University: the official openings of the Percy Gee Building (1958) and the David Wilson Library (2008).
Featuring original memorabilia, newspaper cuttings, photographs and diary entries, this exhibition showcases items from the University Archives which capture the excitement and anticipation of the two very special occasions.

The Big UoL Lunch
Purchase a tasty BBQ with Pimms or a non-alcoholic fruit punch and enjoy together with our street party setting. We'll also be giving away free Rhubarb Eton Mess for dessert!

Queen's Anniversary Prize Lecture: Rising Stars
Join us as we celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee by inviting three rising star guest researchers from Physics, Genetics and Archaeology to tell us about their work and research with free tea and cake!
