Juliet and Michael Humphries KC Award in Law

This award has been made possible through generous support of University of Leicester Law alumni Juliet (Law LLB, 1982) and Michael Humphries KC (Law LLB, 1980).

The purpose of the award is to support a final year Law student who has aspirations of becoming a barrister, and consists of:

• £2,000 in two equal instalments during your final year, which is intended to support you in covering costs associated with pursuing open days, vacation schemes, mini pupillages etc., including accommodation and travel costs.
• Mentoring provided by Juliet & Michael Humphries KC during your final year

Eligibility

To be eligible to be considered for this award, you must meet all of the following criteria:

• Be a final year undergraduate Law student at the University of Leicester during academic year 2026/27; this may be Year 4 of study if you took a Year Abroad in 2025/6, or Year 3 of study if you completed Year 2 in 2025/26. Applicants studying for a Law LLB degree or Law LLB with another discipline, such as Law with Politics LLB or Law with Criminology LLB, may apply for this award.
• Be studying full-time and campus-based
• Be assessed as paying home tuition fees

In addition, a desirable but not mandatory characteristic for the recipient of this award is that they aspire to become a barrister after graduation. Applicants who do have this aspiration, or who are open this career path, should refer to this in their personal statement.

How to apply

Please check your eligibility before making an application. Awards may be withdrawn if we later become aware that successful applicants have not met eligibility criteria or have provided false information.

As part of your application, you will be asked to provide a personal statement of up to 350 words, which could explain:

• i) what difference will receiving the award make to your university experience?
• ii) what barriers have you already encountered or overcome in pursuit of your education?
• iii) what ambitions do you have for your time at university and/or the future beyond university?
• iv) what achievements, academic and/or personal, are you most proud of? There is no right or wrong answer; we are just keen to hear your own story.
• v) What aspects of law are you most interested in, and what areas of law (criminal law, commercial law etc.) appeal to you the most?

The deadline for applying for this bursary is 10am on Monday 12 October 2026. Applications made after this date will not be considered.

Shortlisting

Applications made by the deadline stated above will be considered during the shortlisting process, which will consider the content of their personal statement as well as their Year 1 and Year 2 marks.
