Postgraduates

Tuition fees

Tuition fees contribute to the cost of enrolment, instruction, and examinations, and provide access to University resources such as the library, IT facilities, and various student support services.

Tuition fees do not include everyday study expenses such as books, stationery, or personal IT equipment. Some programmes may also have additional costs, for example, lab safety gear, field trips, or materials for practical work. For information on potential extra costs for your programme, please see the relevant course pages and your offer letter email.

Your tuition fee

We recommend checking your tuition fee in advance by visiting the relevant course page and reviewing your offer letter.

  • For home students, your fee may be eligible for postgraduate loans and other schemes (see below).
  • For overseas students, your first-year tuition fee will usually remain the same for the duration of your course, provided you stay on the same programme. Changing course may result in a higher rate.

Deposits (overseas students)

If you need a Student visa to study in the UK and you are self-financed, you will need to pay a minimum deposit amount of £3,000 in order to receive your CAS. You can pay up to the full tuition fee for your programme if you wish.

Due to visa compliance measures, applicants from countries in Sub-Saharan Africa* will be required to pay £6,000 prior to a CAS being issued. Students from Pakistan will be required to pay £8,000 before a CAS can be issued.

The deposit amount you need to pay will be confirmed in your offer letter, along with the deadline you need to pay it by. Please note that before a CAS can be issued you will also need to meet any offer conditions set out in your offer letter.

You do not need to pay a deposit if:

  • You are an American student applying for a Federal Direct loan or a Sallie Mae loan to cover at least the value of your tuition fee
  • You are a Canadian student applying for a Canadian Government support loan.
  • Your fees are being paid by a sponsor (not a member of your family)
  • You are a UK or Republic of Ireland national.

  • Loan payments are made directly to you by the Student Loans Company.

Placement year/year in industry fees

Some postgraduate taught programmes include an optional placement year or year in industry.

  • An additional fee is charged if an industry placement is secured. This fee is charged separately from, and in addition to, your Masters tuition fee from the previous year.
    • For both home and international PGT students starting their course in January 2026 or April 2026, the placement fee is £3,520.
    • For both home and international PGT students starting their course in September 2026, the placement fee is 15% of the advertised tuition fee (before the deduction of any scholarships/discounts). For example if the advertised course fee is £23,650, you would pay £3,548.

Additional tuition fees

Campus based students are charged tuition fees on an annual basis for when you are a registered student. Your tuition fee is not a set course. Therefore, if you require additional time to complete or re-sit your modules in another academic year, additional tuition fees are charged.

This will be pro rata, based on the annual fee for the next year’s tuition fee and for the additional time that you are registered to complete your modules/course.

Examples of additional tuition fees being charged

  • You pass your resits and move onto the next year. A fee is charged in the next academic year.
  • You fail your resits and go into a repeat year. A fee is charged in the next academic year.

Examples of no additional tuition fees being charged

  • You fail your resits and go into a Resit Without Residence (RWR) year. No fee is charged in the next academic year.
  • You fail your resits and go into a Resit With Residence year. No fee is charged in the next academic year.
  • You are in a resit period over the summer and complete your modules within two months of your original end date and do not enter a new academic year, where no additional fees will be charged.

Distance learning courses

Each course page gives the fee for the current or next academic year. There is one fee for UK students and another for 'international students' (ie. from outside the UK). Where you can apply for a Postgraduate Diploma and/or Certificate separately, that may cost less than the full degree, or may have the same fee.

If you did your undergraduate degree at the University of Leicester you will be entitled to a 20% discount on postgraduate fees with us. There is also a range of postgraduate scholarships in specific disciplines.
