Profile

I gained a BSc in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Aberdeen in 2005 and then studied for an MSc in Sport and Exercise Nutrition at Loughborough University. Following this I remained at Loughborough and undertook a part time PhD alongside a Teaching Associate post. I then moved to be a Research Associate at Nottingham Trent University, and in 2013 I became a Lecturer there. I moved up to Senior Lecturer and Principal Lecturer and was the Undergraduate Courses Manager. I joined the Leicester Lifestyle and Health Research Group as an Associate Professor in Lifestyle Medicine in 2024.

Research

Ruth's main current research area is around student health and well-being. She is particularly interested in the cardiovascular, metabolic and mental health of university students and the environment and behaviours that influence this. 

Supervision

Ruth has supervised / co-supervised 4 students to completion and is currently supervising / co-supervising 4 more. 

Ruth is happy to hear from students interested in self-funding research in the area of student health to discuss ideas. 

Teaching

Ruth leads the module 'Lifestyle Medicine: Prevention and Management of Type 2 Diabetes', which is on the MSc (DL) Diabetes course.
