Profile

Professor Rodger Charlton is a GP Professor of Undergraduate Primary Care Education at Leicester Medical School and an Honorary Professor of Medical Education at Swansea University. Keen interest in Medical Education both teaching Undergraduates and Postgraduate as a TPD for Solihull & E Birmingham Vocational Training Scheme.

Qualified Birmingham 1983. Completed an MPhil in Medical Ethics. Then P/T Lecturer in GP at Nottingham. In 1991-2; visiting fellow University of Otago Medical School New Zealand researching into the perceived needs of undergraduates in palliative care towards his MD thesis. In 1994; appointed Senior Lecturer in Primary Health Care at Keele University. In 2001 awarded the RCGP John Fry Award. 2003 - Director of GP Undergraduate Medical Education at Warwick Medical School. 2011 professor of medical education at Swansea Medical School. 2012 Nottingham Medical School as Director of the Primary Care Education Unit. Appointed Leicester 2017 excited by their new curriculum and its increased focus on primary care. His is an External Examiner at Dundee Medical School An active GP. He received a national bronze clinical excellence award in 2008 and 2013. 

Research

Research interest in end-of-life care and compassion.

My research is into improving community palliative care and training compassionate doctors. Please see my book 'Compassion Continuity and Caring in the NHS'.

My goal is to enable GPs and trainees to prioritise compassion for themselves their colleagues and patients in the face of current pressures.

He was the Honorary Editor of RCGP Publications from 2001 to 2016 and was a member of the editorial board of the Royal College of Physicians in London until 2021.

His is External Examiner at Oxford Brookes University Masters in Clinical Education (since 2014-2019) and at Manchester University Medical School (since 2012-2017)
