I hold visiting professorships with the University of Madras Chennai India; the Shaan’xi Normal University Xi’an China; the Ivan Petrovich Pavlov Medical University Ryazan Russia; and the Anamalai Medical College Anamalai India. I have more than 30 years’ experience of examining patients with traumatic or hypoxic brain injury for the UK courts.

Research

I have gained an international reputation for my research on cognitive and memory function during general anaesthesia as well as research on dementia. In 2004 I organized the 6th International Symposium on Memory and Awareness in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care - the foremost international forum for clinical research in this particular field. I have conducted research in operating theatre and hospital clinical environments on consciousness and psychological factors in patients undergoing surgery. I have published more than 60 papers in peer-reviewed journals and numerous book chapters. I have been an invited speaker at international conferences on more than 30 occasions. In collaboration with colleagues I have won more than £1.2 million in research funding primarily from the NHS and the European Union. I have supervised more than 40 doctoral research projects over the past 30 years.
