Matthew is based within the School of Medical Sciences and specialises in Conversation Analytic (CA) methods, having obtained his PhD from the University of York in 2025.
Matthew is a researcher on the MPS-funded SCALE-ENDO project which aims to improve the safety of gastrointestinal endoscopy. His work examines how communication shapes—and is shaped by—team adaptability across hierarchies throughout different phases of endoscopy care. As part of SCALE-ENDO, Matthew applies CA methods to assess the effectiveness of systems designed to promote safety in endoscopy.

Matthew has published and presented research through various outlets ranging from peer-reviewed journal articles to international conferences. In 2024, he was a visitor to the Centre for Language, Interaction and Culture at UCLA. He is also a member of the International Society for Conversation Analysis (ISCA).
