Profile

I am an atmospheric scientist conducting research at interface of air pollution, human health and environmental policy.  I have expertise in  knowledge exchange and translation of environmental science and technology into applications in industry and policy, with 20 years experience in applied science and engineering.  I lead the Earth Observation Science Research Group in the School of Physics and Astronomy, and I am part of the university's interdisciplinary Centre for Environmental Health and Sustainability.

Research

My research focuses on policy and health related air quality science underpinned by novel technology development in Earth observation instrumentation. My interdisciplinary research aims to understand how human activities are impacting the atmospheric environment and how the atmospheric environment effects human health, with an emphasis on providing evidence for policy. To enable robust quantitative understanding of concentrations of key atmospheric constituents and their variability, I develop and employ a range of observational and modelling methods across local and regional scales to understand anthropogenic emissions and human exposures, including at the interface between indoor and outdoor environments, and evaluate the effectiveness of pollution exposure reduction measures.  A key element of my work involves specifying and developing the next generation of satellite instruments for observing air quality and atmospheric composition.
