Dr Hamish McAuley

NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer

School/Department: Respiratory Sciences, Department of

Profile

My role as an NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer allows me to divide my time equally between clinical practice (and completing specialist training in Respiratory Medicine) and carrying out research.

Prior to this role I attended both Imperial College London to study Physics and subsequently University College London where I obtained my medical degree. I have completed core and physician training in London, Surrey and, more recently, across the Easy Midlands. My PhD was completed during the tumultuous times of COVID-19 and required a significant pivot on my subject matter from my initial plans to identify changes in muscle and physical performance among patient admitted to hospital with acute exacerbations of COPD to investigations sarcopenia and frailty among hospitalised survivors of COVID-19.

Following my appointment as an Academic Clinical Lecturer in 2023 I have returned to investigating muscle in COPD patients where I am seeking to identify phenotypic biomarkers to target both novel pharmacological and established rehabilitative therapies within this population.

Research

My research focuses on improving treatments and outcomes for patients with chronic respiratory conditions including asthma and COPD. Specifically my interest lies in identifying and developing potential interventions targeting frailty, sarcopenia and reduced physical performance within these populations.
