Profile
Dr. Fabian Freund has joined the University of Leicester as a lecturer for population genomics in March 2023.
Fabian has a background in mathematics (PhD in mathematics from the University of Tuebingen, Germany). Previously, he has been a researcher at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Hohenheim (Germany). He has also worked as an IT specialist for high performance computing and research data management at the University of Hohenheim.
Research
Dr. Freund's research interests are in population genomics/genetics. They include mathematical/probabilistic modelling (usually involving coalescent theory), statistical methods, data analysis and bioinformatics. These approaches are then used to answer questions concerning evolution and genetics in a variety of species.
Please see Fabian's ORCID profile to see his publications: https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9958-2703Supervision
If you are interested in writing a thesis in Dr. Freund's research group, please inquire. Additional to "classic" population genetic studies, i.e. analysing genetic diversity and comparing it with phenotypic and/or environmental data to learn about the population's properties and past, Fabian is happy to supervise projects within population genomics (and a bit beyond) with a clear focus on bioinformatics and/or mathematics (probability theory).
Teaching
Dr. Freund teaches lectures and tutorials in bioinformatics (in modules BS2040, BS7105), population genetics (BS1050) and statistics (BS2004).
