Dr Dalia Tsimpida

Associate Professor of Public Health and Epidemiology

Profile for Dalia Tsimpida

School/Department: Division of Public Health and Epidemiology; SAPPHIRE Group

Email: d.tsimpida@leicester.ac.uk

Profile

Dalia Tsimpida is Associate Professor of Public Health and Epidemiology at the University of Leicester and a Visiting Academic in the School of Social, Economic and Political Sciences at the University of Southampton. At Leicester, she is a core member of the Kidney Lifestyle Research Team and is based within the SAPPHIRE group (Social Science, APPlied Healthcare and Improvement Research) in the Division of Public Health and Epidemiology.

Her research programme sits at the intersection of Public Health, Epidemiology, and the Social Sciences, with a focus on health inequalities across the life course. She is internationally recognised for advancing understanding of hearing loss in later life as a public health priority, emphasising its links to modifiable risk factors across the life course rather than viewing it as an inevitable consequence of ageing. Her work has generated influential evidence demonstrating the wider societal and clinical implications of hearing loss, including its associations with loneliness, depression, and chronic conditions such as Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), Type 2 Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, and Dementia.

A central theme of her research is understanding how structural, socioeconomic, and environmental determinants shape inequities in health outcomes and access to care. She has led work examining communication barriers within healthcare systems and their impact on chronic disease management for people with hearing loss, contributing to policy-relevant insights on inclusive and equitable healthcare delivery.

Methodologically, she brings advanced expertise in mixed methods and interdisciplinary approaches. Her work integrates longitudinal and cohort analyses, large-scale population datasets (including ELSA, UK Biobank, QoF, primary care records, and Integrated Care Board data), systematic and qualitative evidence synthesis, and spatial analytical modelling. She applies behavioural science frameworks, including COM-B and social norms theory, alongside innovative spatial and predictive modelling techniques to evaluate and inform the implementation of interventions in real-world settings.

Prior to academia, she spent 18 years in the governmental sector where she worked as a senior Behavioural and Social Research and Analysis specialist, developing extensive experience in policy design, applied analytics, and evidence-based decision-making. She completed her PhD as an NIHR Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Manchester in 2021, followed by postdoctoral research and teaching roles. She has held academic appointments at the Universities of Liverpool and Southampton, including leadership as Thematic Cluster Lead for Data Skills and Methods within the ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership.

Her work has influence across research, policy, and academic leadership. She serves on national and international research funding panels and is a Consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO) and Special Advisor to the World Hearing Forum (WHF), contributing to global strategy and policy development in hearing health. She is a Chartered Psychologist (CPsychol) and Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health (FRSPH), and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA).

She also holds senior editorial positions, including Academic Editor at PLOS ONE and Editorial Board Member for BMC Public Health and BMC Geriatrics. Her research has informed national and international policy on population ageing and sensory health inequalities.

Her CV and full list of publications are available via her ORCID profile: Dialechti Tsimpida (0000-0002-3709-5651) https://orcid.org/0000-0002-3709-5651

Teaching

Dr Tsimpida has an extensive and sustained record of teaching and academic leadership in UK higher education since 2018, with contributions spanning the Universities of Leicester, Southampton, Liverpool, and Manchester. Her teaching portfolio reflects a multidisciplinary and research-led approach, covering public health, healthy ageing, applied behavioural and social sciences in medicine, and advanced research methods. She has delivered teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including large-scale delivery to medical student cohorts.

At the University of Leicester, she co-leads the Public Health module within the BSc Clinical Sciences programme and provides supervision to undergraduate and doctoral researchers. She also supervises PhD students at the University of Southampton, where she holds a Visiting Academic (Associate Professor) position, maintaining an active role in doctoral training and mentorship.

At the University of Southampton, she held significant programme leadership responsibilities, leading four postgraduate modules within the MSc Gerontology and MSc Global Ageing and Policy programmes, alongside co-leading university-wide undergraduate modules with annual reach exceeding 500 students. She undertook full curriculum redesign across multiple modules, embedding cutting-edge research evidence and strengthening the integration of policy and practice. In addition, she served as Thematic Cluster Lead for Data Skills and Methods within the ESRC South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership (SCDTP), providing strategic oversight of interdisciplinary doctoral training for over 50 PhD students across the SCDTP's four partner universities (University of Southampton, University of Brighton, University of Portsmouth and University of Chichester).

At the University of Liverpool, she held a senior leadership role as Theme Lead for Public, Preventative and Global Health within the MBChB Year 2 programme. In this capacity, she provided strategic direction and academic coordination across a large teaching team, ensuring coherence and quality, alongside nearly 100 hours of curriculum delivery annually. She led the development of new teaching content delivered to over 300 students, comprehensively revised workshop materials, and authored a substantial bank of assessment items aligned with Faculty Assessment and Quality Standards Committee requirements.

Earlier in her academic career at the University of Manchester, she contributed to teaching and clinical skills training across multiple programmes. She supervised medical and physician associate students within the Consultation Skills Learning Centre (CSLC) and delivered teaching on the BSc Psychology programme, including developmental psychology, research methods, and quantitative analysis. She also contributed to postgraduate education in healthcare informatics, with a focus on health information governance and core informatics principles.

Her pedagogic practice is characterised by innovation and a strong emphasis on research-informed teaching. She has developed microlearning approaches that utilise published research as core teaching material and is the creator of MENTOR, a registered mobile educational tool designed to support the development of communication skills in medical education. She holds a Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), recognising her sustained leadership, impact, and excellence in teaching and learning in higher education.

    Interests

Dr Tsimpida welcomes enquiries from prospective PhD students with research interests in any of the areas below. If you are interested in pursuing doctoral research under her supervision, please get in touch at d.tsimpida@leicester.ac.uk.

Dr Tsimpida's research sits at the intersection of public health, epidemiology, health services research, and health inequalities, with a particular focus on sensory health, mental health, and healthy ageing.

Her work spans four interconnected areas: the relationship between hearing loss, mental health, and healthy ageing; the impact of environmental and occupational exposures on health equity; health systems research and implementation, including the development of evidence-based frameworks to inform national and international policy; and the translation of research findings into real-world health system reforms and service delivery improvements. She is particularly interested in how routine health data and geospatial tools can be harnessed to monitor health inequalities and drive policy change at scale.

Her research is driven by a commitment to generating robust, interdisciplinary evidence that informs policy and practice, with a strong emphasis on translating findings into meaningful improvements in health systems, service delivery, and population health outcomes.
