Sexual violence against women and girls in Britain will be discussed by experts in a public lecture at University of Leicester this month.

This year’s Annual Scarman Lecture from the School of Criminology at the University of Leicester is entitled ‘Policing and Sexual Violence: Reflecting on challenges and opportunities for change’. This free public event will take place on Wednesday 27 September 2023 from 5pm.

The discussion chaired by Dr Emma Sleath, Associate Professor of Criminology at University of Leicester will include Jayne Butler, CEO at Rape Crisis England & Wales and Superintendent Manjit Atwal, Leicestershire Police.

The discussion will be followed by questions from the audience. The event will take place at the Peter Williams Lecture Theatre on University of Leicester’s main campus and will be broadcast live on Microsoft Teams.

Since 2008, the Scarman Lecture series has afforded the School of Criminology opportunities to invite high-profile guest speakers to deliver a public lecture about current issues relating to criminology, criminal justice and community safety.

The series takes its name from Lord Scarman, a former judge, barrister and Law Lord who led the enquiry into the Brixton Riots in 1981.

Dr Emma Sleath said: “We know that sexual violence survivors continue to experience poor service from police forces, but this talk provides an exciting opportunity to hear from key experts about what is needed to enact real and sustained change in this area.”
