Foundations in Modern Scientific Frontiers

Module code: PA1600

This module introduces you to the frontiers of research in four areas where the School of Physics and Astronomy excels. Designed to put the methods learned elsewhere into practice, this module will help you explore different applications within physics and modern interdisciplinary science while developing practical scientific and analytical skills that will be useful in your future career. The aim is to inspire and motivate by gaining insight into some of the most active areas of research at the School of Physics and Astronomy, discovering where your interests could take you in future. Each topic uses a slightly different approach — blending traditional lectures, computer workshops, and interactive sessions to prepare you for curiosity-driven mini-projects.

Topics covered:

  • Astrophysics – Introducing how observational astronomy reveals the physical processes governing stars and their lifecycles.
  • Climate Science – Discover the physics behind Earth's climate processes, energy balance, the greenhouse effect, and satellite remote sensing while exploring the role of physicists in addressing global climate challenges.
  • Data Science – Learn an interdisciplinary approach to making accurate arguments using data and figures to reveal underlying behaviour.
  • Space and Planetary Science – Explore spacecraft, planetary systems and the science of space exploration.
