On this module you’ll encounter texts spanning the Middle Ages, Renaissance and eighteenth century which vividly represent a rapidly changing culture. We’ll read works that depict England’s encounters with the wider world at period of growing colonial ambition and conflict, reflecting and engaging with contemporary geopolitical and cultural debates. The ‘discoveries’ we’ll be working on are the travels, inventions and literary innovations of this period, but also your own discoveries in the University’s collections of rare books and manuscripts. You’ll learn how to work with rare books, discover what is fascinating about an artefact, and craft an exhibit for the public.
