This module explores the role of advanced materials in the design and performance of modern aircraft and spacecraft, with a focus on improving efficiency, sustainability, and structural integrity in safety-critical applications. You will study the key classes of aerospace materials, including lightweight metals, advanced polymer composites, and high-temperature nickel-based superalloys, and examine how their properties influence structural performance in demanding aerospace environments.
You’ll develop an understanding of how material microstructure, processing techniques, and design choices affect strength, durability, and reliability. These concepts are directly applied to aerospace structural design and performance optimisation. You will also consider the broader engineering implications of materials selection, including environmental impact, fuel efficiency, and cross-sector applications in industries such as automotive and marine engineering. By the end of the module, you will be able to evaluate and select appropriate materials for aerospace structures, applying engineering judgement to balance performance, safety, and sustainability requirements.
