Tribology in Engineering Design

This module introduces the principles of tribology, the study of friction, wear and lubrication in engineering systems. You will learn how to compare surface characterisation techniques and understand the assumptions and limitations of Hertzian contact mechanics, alongside common non-Hertzian effects. This includes examining the processes by which damage occurs during typical wear mechanisms in engineering components.

Building on these fundamentals, you’ll analyse common wear mechanisms and derive relevant mathematical models. Theories of contact mechanics, friction, wear and lubrication are applied to evaluate the performance of common tribological components, developing an understanding of how these factors interact in practice.

You’ll then consider how this understanding applies to engineering design, by applying your mechanical, materials and tribological knowledge to component selection, recommending appropriate surface engineering solutions to improve performance and service lifetime. You will also analyse and critique tribological systems in terms of surface and material characteristics, contact geometry, relative motion, operating environment and lubrication, recommending strategies for friction control and wear prevention.
