Biofluid Mechanics
Module code: EG3062
The human body is made up of approximately 65% water, and fluids play an integral role in almost every physiological process. In this module, you will apply core mechanical engineering and hydraulics principles to the human cardiovascular system, developing a deep understanding of how fluid flow influences the functionality of the heart and lungs. You will analyse how this flow behaves through pneumatics analogies and how it is altered by cardiovascular prostheses and medical devices, with a specific focus on the engineering design of artificial heart valves and arterial bypass grafts. Finally, you will explore how modern engineering tools, such as computational simulation software, are used to model these complex biofluid environments to predict device performance and patient outcomes.
