Introduction to Management

Module code: MN1033

This module explores the issues of planning, organising, leading, and controlling within contemporary organisations.  You will examine how managers coordinate resources to achieve strategic objectives.  The module introduces management as both a discipline and a practical activity.  The complexity of managing people, processes, and performance is emphasised.

You will be guided through the theories and concepts associated with classical management theory, human relations approaches, and contemporary perspectives on leadership and governance.  You will analyse how management thought has evolved over time.  Key frameworks are applied to real organisational scenarios.  The relationship between management and organisational culture is explored.

The module helps you to understand managerial roles, responsibilities, and decision-making processes.  You will develop analytical skills to evaluate management effectiveness.  Case studies support the application of theory to practice, and communication, coordination and accountability are key themes throughout.

You will also consider how managers operate in diverse organisational settings and international contexts.   You will examine ethical leadership and responsible management practices.  The impact of digital transformation on management processes is discussed and by completion, you will appreciate management as a core driver of organisational success.
