Module code: MK3002

This module examines how strategic economic sectors shape power, competitiveness, and influence in the contemporary international system.  It explores the interaction between technology, innovation, and geopolitics in a world increasingly defined by multipolarity, strategic rivalry, and economic fragmentation.  The module introduces you to the concept of strategic sectors, focusing on areas such as energy, digital technologies, semiconductors, defence, space, and critical resources.  It analyse why control over these sectors is central to national competitiveness, economic resilience and geopolitical leverage.  You will examine how innovation capacity, industrial ecosystems and technological leadership contribute to long-term economic and strategic advantage.

A key focus of the module is the role of states, firms, and innovation systems in shaping outcomes within strategic sectors.  It compares different approaches to industrial and technology policy adopted by major global actors, highlighting the interaction between public intervention, market dynamics, and global value chains.  The module also considers how different political and economic models influence strategies for technological development and competitiveness.
