Immunity, Infection and Chronic Disease: Theory
Module code: MB7309
In-depth focus on immunology, infection and chronic disease. This module will provide you with a detailed and systematic examination of immunity with a particular focus on infection and chronic inflammatory diseases.
In this module you will learn about the molecular and cellular basis for immunity and then consider which host mechanisms are involved in various infections and other conditions. You will learn the mechanisms underlying immunity, and the factors controlling resistance and susceptibility to infection. In addition to immunity, we will discuss the mechanisms of action of drugs and other antimicrobial therapies, in particular the details of antibiotic action and resistance.
Topics covered
- Cellular and humoral immune systems
- Infection and disease
- Innate and acquired immune responses
- Natural history of infection
- Biology of prokaryotic and eukaryotic pathogens
- Antimicrobial agents
- Mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis
