Global Voices and the Publishing Industry

Module code: EN2192

Are you interested in working in publishing or another area of the creative industries after graduation? If so, this module will give you direct experience working closely with a literary organisation, allowing you to immerse yourself in activities such as editorial work, developing author profiles, and contributing to live events such as book launches.

You will undertake a 70-hour e-placement with an independent literary organisation or arts platform. Your organisation will work with you to devise an e-placement project that fits with your interests and enables you to gain skills and knowledge relevant to the workplace.

Alongside your e-placement, you will study four literary texts which may include Akwaeke Emezi’s Freshwater (2018), Aravind Adiga’s The White Tiger (HarperCollins, 2008), Jackie Kay, James Procter and Gemma Robinson (eds.), Out of Bounds: British Black and Asian Poets (Bloodaxe, 2012); and Nikesh Shukla (ed), The Good Immigrant (Unbound, 2017).

As well as analysing the content of these books, you will explore how they have been packaged and promoted to readers. You will situate your readings of these texts in relation to current debates on the global literary marketplace, structural inequalities in the publishing industry, and the role of literary prize culture in the publishing process.
