Advanced Composite Materials

This module focuses on the theory, laminate design and sustainability of composite materials, which is nowadays a widely used materials in space, nuclear and aerospace applications. Fundamental physical and mathematical theories are fully provided for the step-by-step design of composite materials, including material concept design, preliminary design of laminate lay-up, detailed design for sub-component, and prototype testing of failure mechanism. Manufacturing and recycling (sustainability) are introduced and summarised for various types of composite materials. The fundamental theories are mainly on the linear algebra and two-dimensional (quasi-three-dimensional) anisotropic elasticity. Coursework focuses on structural integrity design of laminate composite for the trending engineering problems.
