Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) uses numerical methods to analyse problems involving fluid flows. Fluid flows are encountered in numerous engineering applications, from aerodynamics in automotive and aerospace industries to turbomachinery, energy systems, biomedical flows, and environmental engineering. Understanding and predicting these flows is essential for optimising performance, improving efficiency, and ensuring safety in engineering designs.

You will develop both theoretical understanding and practical skills, with lectures covering the fundamental equations of fluid motion, discretisation techniques, turbulence modelling, parallel computing, model assessment and validation, and understanding challenges of modelling different types of flows. Workshops will reinforce theory through hands-on experience with state-of-the-art CFD software, allowing you to simulate a wide range of flows, for example, rotating flows, external aerodynamics flows, and multi-phase flows. By integrating theory and practice, the module provides you with the skills to apply CFD in real-world engineering challenges.
