Advanced imaging and other materials characterisation techniques are as invaluable for the understanding of biological processes and human disease as they are for the analysis of structural steels or semi-conducting materials for electronics. You’ll investigate the fundamentals of physical and chemical characterisation techniques and imaging methodologies including optical, fluorescent and confocal microscopy, electron microscopy, x-ray and neutron diffraction. Advanced methodologies such as secondary ion mass spectroscopy, Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), and light sheet microscopy are also considered. This module has a particular focus on the analysis of data from current research, using engineering calculations and quantitative microscopy tools to interpret microstructural changes. You will also leverage automation techniques for data analysis and implement structured technical documentation to record experimental findings, aligning with the rigorous data handling and compliance frameworks required in industrial and clinical research laboratories.
