Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine focuses on the combination of engineered structures, biological cells and the human body’s unique capabilities for regeneration to heal complex injuries and cure disease. In this module, you will learn how advances in knowledge of human and cell biology have led to improved bio-engineering solutions and patient outcomes. You’ll consider the importance of interdisciplinarity and the key role of effective communication between clinicians, basic scientists, engineers and patients. Adopting a systems engineering perspective, you will analyse how manufacturing processes scale from laboratory benches to clinical reality. This module will also utilise formal risk analysis methodologies to consider the sustainability, environmental, and societal impacts alongside technical and ethical risk, allowing you to establish robust governance and clear technical documentation when selecting a tissue engineering solution for a specific biomedical engineering application.
