This module builds on your Classical Control understanding, and presents the Modern Control approach - an analysis of the internal dynamics of a system, giving a clearer understanding of how an output comes about, given an input.
The “State-Space Framework” is used to capture the interaction between the inputs to a linear system, its internal dynamics (states) and its output. With this framework, key aspects of control systems design and analysis are considered in open loop and closed loop, such as the solution of its state and output trajectory under varying input and initial state conditions, stability, controllability and observability, state feedback control using pole placement and optimal control law, command tracking, tuning, state estimation using state observers, and output feedback control. Since systems are nonlinear in reality, the module concludes with a focus on how nonlinear systems are linearised about an equilibrium point using Jacobian linearisation.
You will be equipped with theoretical understanding, practical solving and analysis ability, as well as the ability to analyse linear (or linearised) systems and carry out associated computations in the design of control systems using MATLAB and Simulink.
