Medical devices are defined by the MHRA as “any instrument, apparatus, appliance, software, implant, reagent, material or other article intended by the manufacturer to be used, alone or in combination, for human beings.” As such they cover a vast range of products from bandages and splints to surgical instruments, bone implants and pacemakers. In this module, you will discuss the various classes of medical device and the influence of class on path to the clinic, evaluating how these classifications dictate risk management and compliance with international safety standards. You will explore the developments in specific medical devices, utilising structural mechanical design principles, and the role these developments have played in improved patient outcomes. There will also be a focus on prosthetic design, aligning with modern Orthotist/Prosthetist career paths, and how advanced control systems and electromechanics methods can be applied.
