Fluid Dynamics and Aerodynamics

This module introduces the principles of fluid dynamics and shows how engineers analyse the behaviour of fluids in a wide range of systems and applications. You will learn how to apply the fundamental equations of fluid mechanics, including conservation of mass, momentum and energy, to understand both steady and unsteady flows.
You’ll explore how fluids move around bodies such as aerofoils and wings, using inviscid, incompressible flow theory while recognising its assumptions and limitations. This module also examines the effects of viscosity, including boundary layers and flow separation, and how these influence drag, lift, efficiency and power requirements in practical engineering systems.
Through theory and laboratory work, you will develop skills in flow and pressure measurement and learn how to calculate key fluid properties such as pressure, flow distribution, stream function, vorticity, stress and forces. These principles are used to evaluate the performance of engineering systems while considering their wider environmental and social impact.
