This specialist module will develop your understanding of engineering materials, their properties, and the manufacturing processes used to produce mechanical components. It explores how the structure of materials affects their behaviour, and how processing methods can change properties such as strength, durability and resistance to failure.
A particular focus is placed on metals, especially steels, including how carbon content, alloying elements and heat treatment influence their performance. You will learn how to compare different classes of engineering materials, select suitable materials for specific applications, and analyse phase change using phase diagrams, thermodynamics and kinetics, understanding how microstructure and manufacturing routes affect the final properties of components.
This module also considers the environmental impact of materials across their life cycle and introduces surface engineering approaches used to extend component life, for example by improving resistance to corrosion and wear. Through an industrial visit or case study, you will see how materials processing is applied in practice and how microscopic examination helps engineers understand the relationship between processing, structure and performance.
