Dynamics and Vibrations

This module introduces the dynamics of engineering systems, helping you to understand how particles and rigid bodies move and how their motion can be analysed. Plane motion is studied using cartesian, polar and normal tangential coordinate systems, describing the behaviour of moving components both theoretically and through experimental work.

This includes applying key principles such as Newton's laws, work and energy, linear and angular impulse and momentum, and conservation of energy to solve engineering problems involving physical systems in motion. The module also introduces mechanical vibration and damping, showing how engineers analyse the response of such systems both theoretically and experimentally.

Through lectures, problem solving and laboratory activities, you will develop the skills needed to assess the performance and safety of dynamic systems. This includes identifying potential safety and security risks associated with moving or vibrating components and considering appropriate ways to mitigate them in practical engineering applications.
