Introduction to Biomaterials

Biomaterials are materials used in the treatment of human injury or disease, either by themselves or as critical parts of complex medical devices. In this introductory module, you will explore the clinical need for biomaterials alongside their fundamental structures and role in effective tissue repair and regeneration. Moving from theory to practical application, you’ll engage in the mechanical design and 3D modelling of simple biomaterials, learning how they are synthesized and evaluated through pre-clinical testing. Crucially, you will apply rigorous risk analysis and align your work with modern industry and safety standards. Finally, you will generate formal technical documentation while conducting systematic materials selection processes to specify appropriate materials for targeted clinical applications.
