This module introduces the professional, managerial and commercial aspects of engineering, helping you to understand how projects are successfully delivered in industry. You will explore the principles of project management, professional ethics and engineering practice, and gain insight into legal, commercial and organisational factors, including health and safety, contracts, intellectual property and liability.

Through practical activities, you’ll learn how to plan, manage and deliver a substantive engineering project using industry standard tools and techniques. This includes considering safety, technical and commercial risk, alongside sustainability, and critically evaluating quality management and continuous improvement across diverse organisational and project environments. These activities also build an understanding of how engineers balance technical, safety and commercial requirements.

This module also develops the professional skills expected of modern engineers, including leadership, teamwork and people management, alongside reflection on personal professional development. By the end of the module, you’ll be able to make informed engineering decisions, communicate effectively in professional environments, and understand the wider responsibilities of engineers within industry and society.
