Introduction to Finance and Accounting

Module code: AF1001

This module explores the issues of financial decision-making, accounting systems and performance measurement within organisations operating in domestic and global markets.  You will examine how financial information is generated, interpreted, and used to support managerial judgement.  The module introduces the financial architecture that underpins business activity and establishes a foundation for understanding organisational sustainability and value creation.

You will be guided through the theories and concepts associated with financial reporting, budgeting, costing methods, cash flow management, and investment appraisal techniques.  You will engage with core accounting frameworks and regulatory principles.  Emphasis is placed on understanding both financial and management accounting perspectives.  Analytical tools are introduced to interpret balance sheets, income statements, and financial ratios.

The module helps you to develop quantitative literacy and financial awareness essential for international business professionals.  You will build confidence in analysing financial data and assessing organisational performance.  Practical exercises support applied understanding of profitability, liquidity, and capital structure decisions.  These skills are critical for strategic and operational management roles.

You will consider how organisations allocate resources, evaluate investment opportunities, and manage financial risk across different economic contexts.  You will explore ethical considerations in financial reporting and governance.  The global dimension of accounting standards and financial transparency will also be examined.  By the end of the module, you will appreciate the strategic importance of financial insight in business leadership.
