Race, Ethnicity and Racisms in Britain

Using the city of Leicester as its starting point, this module aims to develop a foundational understanding of the sociology of race and ethnicity as social constructs, and as one lens through which to better understand social inequalities in late-modern Britain. This is achieved through: an examination of the historical development of race and ethnicity, and an examination of key introductory theories; an exploration of the lived and everyday experience of race and ethnicity in various social, employment and media spaces.

In a general sense, the module examines how constructions of race and ethnicity have developed over time. How race and ethnicity have influenced how different groups have been (re)constructed and imagined (and imagine themselves), and how these imaginings have influenced notions of identity, belonging, (re)presentation and inclusion in late-modern Britain.
